When I was first given the responsibility to drive growth for a successful organization, I had no idea what I was doing. But I've been a student of persuasion and how people make decisions for 25 years. Somewhere along the way, it unlocked for me: Growth is about trust.
To grow (in a way that is sustainable and not extractive) an organization needs two things: relationships and risk. The balance of these two factors is where trust happens.
I've spent most of the last decade applying this basic idea to a variety of institutions, documenting our learnings along the way. But the most rewarding thing is when a leader has their trust awakening. They see that all the marketing tactics, sales strategies, culture programs in the world won't solve for distrust. And distrust rarely raises its hand and asks to be noticed. It creeps in corners and wraps an organization around its will. When a leader who has tried to be trusting and trustworthy their whole career suddenly realizes how trust really works in their particular organization—the custom flows of its contours—its nothing short of magic.
